Every action you take is to reach a goal. This is true in every aspect of our lives. Whether we are mowing the lawn, learning a new language or watching a movie; we are working for a specific outcome. Why should website design be any different? Here atPhoenixweb design studios we like to start the conversation with a client by asking the question: what is the goal you are trying to achieve and how is your website going to help you with that?

The above question is a very critical one. The answer to this question dictates what kind of website is going to be created. Sometimes the client is simply looking to get a presence on the internet, sometimes they are looking to gain new clients and sometimes they want a website because everyone else has one. If the last option is the reason why the client wants a website, he is better off not getting a website built. The internet has truly changed how we do business on a massive scale. More and more people are looking at E-commerce as the new way of selling and buying products. The internet certainly allows businesses to reach a global audience. If your goal is to do E-commerce then you must be very careful in the design and implementation of your website. Any changes you make will result in the impact to millions of potential customers.

Your website is basically an online store. Just like a prospective customer walks in your store and is influenced by the colors, layout and presentation; similarly an online visitor is influenced by your websites design. If the customer gets confused by your website and does not find what he is looking for in a couple of seconds, you have just lost the sale. Therefore an e-commerce website needs to have a completely different layout than a presentation website. Again, the design of a website must be to help with the goals of your business. If your website does not help you with your goals (selling a product, displaying a prototype, displaying information) then your website has failed. A lot of people forget that a website can help your business but it can also hurt your business.

In conclusion, it is imperative that you sit down and think about the goals you are trying to achieve and how a website will help you in achieving those goals. If you fail to do that, then your website will at best be a neutral online presence and at worst a distraction and source of confusion for your customers.

There is no doubt that social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have revolutionized how we communicate. These platforms allow people to interact instantaneously and effortlessly. The power of social media is now being harnessed by businesses as well. We see the proliferation of corporate brands in Facebook and LinkedIn already.

Most small businesses are jumping on the Facebook bandwagon as well. The power of Facebook in attracting visitors can not be denied. It is a free marketing tool for your business. However, what most small business owners do not realize is that Facebook is just a marketing tool. In other words, it is merely a means to attract visitors and not a conversion tool.

Facebook can get you leads but you have to convert those leads into actual business. Do not expect Facebook to do that for you. Your website needs to be promoted on Facebook. Your website is the conversion tool. It is the best tool out there. You must wow your visitors on their visit. If you fail to convert then an opportunity for a potential client has been lost.

Social media platforms are one of the tools in your mailbox. You cannot expect to get the job done with this one; albeit; powerful tool. Remember, Facebook can drive visitors to your website but it is still up to you to convert those visitors into clients. You do this by creating a sharp and high caliber website that tells visitors you mean business.

The new age of minimalism

What do I mean by minimalism? Statistically speaking, your website needs to catch the user’s attention in the first 7 seconds. Otherwise, it’s game over. A lot of websites today have too much going on at one time. It is imperative that you present a user with coherent information instead of inundating them with information. Minimalism in web design is the use of neutral colors, pertitent graphics and partitioned content.

Web pages that make sense

Before you even think about creating a web page, you must think through what your goals are in terms of the website. Are you looking to create a website that showcases your product/services, are you creating a website to give out more information about your business or are you simply wanting a website because everyone else has it (hopefully that’s not true). Thinking about the goal will drive the design of the website. If you are a wedding photographer and just want to showcase your work then it makes sense to create a slideshow webpage as the main page. You could have a contact page which would allow users to contact you. The minimalist design criteria would be satisfied. A lot of people approach website design with ‘more the better’ philosophy which is not true. Select a layout that meets your goal.

Layout, layout, layout

A good way of drafting a minimalist website is to sketch out on a notepad what key elements you want the visitor to pay attention to. Think from a customer’s perspective. If they found you via a search engine, they are obviously looking for a solution to their problem. How can you present your services in the main page which convinces the visitor to contact you? This is a concept worth exploring. The whole point of the website is to get the interested visitor to take the next step; try your service/product. How do you make that happen? You make that happen by presenting to the visitor the reasons why your product/service will solve their problems. There is a catch though! If you are not clear and concise or if your message does not resonate with the user; they will be on their way to try the next result in the search engine. That is why it is essential that you create a simple and concise layout that focuses the user’s attention on your product/service.

Is that it?

When it comes to web design, concentrating on the above three points will always yield a quality website. Remember, websites are a means to an end. You want the visitor to overcome their hesitation to take the next step. If you design your website with that goal in mind you will convert visitors into customers!

Believe it or not, Facebook has changed how people interact with each other online. Businesses have been slow to realize that Facebook can also be used to interact with their customers. This possibility has opened up an entirely new form of advertising. You can take advantage of this free venue as well by creating a simple Facebook page for your business. Here are some points to remember as you jump on the Facebook bandwagon:

DO create a Facebook page with your company logo and info.
DO make sure to upload photos of yourself/employees/customers to make it personable
DO keep your Facebook page interesting with regular content updates
DO add a link your Facebook page on your website
DO keep Facebook posts short and simple
DO give people an incentive to comment or like your posts. For instance, offer 25% off your product/service to the first 50 people who comment or like your posts.
